How to make a rent receipt online

This rent receipt maker starts with a rent line and this month as the rental period, so most receipts take a minute.

  1. Add the landlord or agent details, the tenant's name and contact details, and the address of the property.
  2. Enter the amount received, the payment date and how the tenant paid. Change the rental period if the payment covers something other than this month.
  3. Add the landlord's name for the signature line, pick one of the 13 designs, and download the PDF for the tenant.

What is a rent receipt?

A rent receipt is the landlord's or agent's written confirmation that rent for a stated period was received. It protects both sides: the tenant can prove they paid, and the landlord has a clear record if there is ever a dispute.

Only record rent that was really paid, and only for the period it covers. A monthly rent receipt for each payment, numbered in order, gives both of you an unbroken history of the tenancy.

What to include in a rent receipt

A clear rent receipt format answers who paid whom, for what, and when. This tool has a field for each of these:

  • The landlord or agent's name and contact details
  • The tenant's name and contact details
  • The address of the property, such as a flat, room or house
  • A receipt number and the date the rent was paid
  • The rental period the payment covers, from and to
  • The amount received
  • The payment method, such as cash, bank transfer or card
  • Any balance the tenant still owes, if the payment was partial
  • The landlord's tax number, if the tenant has asked for it
  • A signature line for the landlord or agent

For a house rent receipt paid in cash, the signature matters most, because there is no bank record to fall back on.

Monthly rent receipts for a whole year

Tenants often need a receipt for every month of the year at once, for their own records or an application. In the receipt details, set the rental period to the whole range, such as 1 January to 31 December, and choose one receipt per month. The PDF then has a separate page for each month, up to 24.

Each page covers one calendar month, takes the next receipt number in order, and is dated on the same day of its month as the payment date you entered. Only include months for which the rent was really paid.

Rent receipt vs rent invoice

Both can travel between the same landlord and tenant each month, but they do opposite jobs:

Many landlords skip the invoice when the rent and due date are fixed in the lease, and send only a receipt once the money arrives.
